Going Green in the Laundry Room
According to an article at ecomaids.com,
“The laundry room is a fairly easy place to cut some of your environmental impact. By making small changes in the way you do laundry, you can save money on your power bill and decrease the damage done to the environment.
Use an energy efficient washer and dryer. The Energy Star label means that an appliance uses between 20 and 40% less energy than federal regulations mandate. Appliances that qualify for the Energy Star label are displayed with a sticker that compares energy use and efficiency between the appliance you’re looking at and other brands or models, so shop around and find one that works for you.
Buy eco-friendly detergent. When looking for eco-friendly laundry detergent, you don’t necessarily want to be looking for words on the package that can be misleading; the word “natural,” for instance, has no real meaning when on a box. You want to look at the ingredients list. Good things to look for are grain alcohol, plant oils, rosemary, and sage. Try to avoid things like triclosan, phosphates, petroleum, and synthetic colors or fragrances, since all these things can be unhealthy for your household and severely damaging to the environment.
Clean the dryer vents so that your dryer doesn’t have to work as hard to get rid of its exhaust. Dust accumulates incredibly quickly in a dryer vent, so monthly removal is a good idea to help things moving along efficiently. Excess buildup of dust is also a fire hazard, so regular cleaning is a good safety practice as well.
Use a clothesline instead of a dryer. The dryer uses a fair amount of power to do what it does, especially if you’re running several loads through it each day. If the weather is nice and you have someplace to hang them, clotheslines can have your clothes dry in no time. Plus, the fresh smell of the sun and wind is something you’ll never get from a dryer!
Only wash what really needs washing. If you’ve only worn a pair of jeans once, didn’t spill anything on them, and they don’t smell, that pair of jeans can probably be worn again. Wearing pairs of pants three times apiece can significantly reduce the amount of laundry you do, and therefore how much energy you use. Obviously, smelly or dirty clothes need to be washed, but you can use your better judgment here.
By adapting a few simple changes, you may start to see a real difference in your power bill. The environment will certainly thank you!”
